Marjorie "Marge" Scheier

Marjorie “Marge” Scheier passed away on April 4, 2021 at the age of 89 with her children Ann and Martin by her side. She will be missed by her children Martin Scheier and Ann (Bruce) Leonard; 6 grandchildren Ian (Serena) Leonard, Emily Leonard, Austin Scheier, Drew Scheier, Jordan Scheier, Matthew Scheier; brother, Frank Trachtman and an extended family including a niece, nephew, and grandnieces and grandnephews, along with many lifelong friends.

She is predeceased by her husband Arthur Scheier, son Ephraim Scheier and grandson Samuel Leonard.

Marge was born and raised in Philadelphia and enjoyed many childhood summers in the country at Pine Forest Camp. She graduated from Girls High School in Philadelphia and in 1954 graduated with a BFA in Fashion Illustration from the Philadelphia Museum School of Art. Art was her passion. Experimenting in many media, painting was her specialty.

Starting with abstract, the arc of her work took her to realistic themes of people in motion in scenes of everyday life. The subjects of her artwork could be found locally and regionally in South Jersey and Philadelphia at festivals, basketball games, picnics, or regattas on a river, hot air balloon festivals, horse shows, or scenes from her many travels across the US or around the world. Many of her adventures were captured on canvas.

Marge was active in the local art community as a board member of the Perkins Center for the Arts in Moorestown, NJ, a member of the Abington Arts Center and the Philadelphia Sketch Club. She exhibited her artwork regionally in NJ, Philadelphia and Atlanta. Her painting On The Move is published in Philadelphia Images Philadelphia People, Places and Pastimes by Artists from The University of the Arts. In 1970, Marge completed her teaching certification in Art Education at the Philadelphia College of Art, and she enjoyed teaching elementary art in the Delran School District for several years. A beloved teacher, Marge’s students recognized her outside of school long after she retired and stopped to talk with her in public, much to the embarrassment of her children!

Marge found many friends, some life-long, through playing bridge. She was a member of several bridge groups, until the pandemic closed the in-person games in 2020. She was an avid reader, participated in book discussion groups, and she could often be found in the Moorestown Library perusing the shelves for “a good read” She enjoyed sharing books together with her children and there were many animated discussions about the stories.

Above all, Marge loved her family and enjoyed supporting the interests of her children, and grandchildren. Often involved in their various activities, Marge painted signs our annual PTA Fair and helped the kids make tie-dyed t-shirts for the neighborhood. She planned creative birthday parties making sure we had our favorite cakes, games and surprises. She had a gift for conversation and could easily engage and laugh with anyone, making them feel at ease. Summers were spent on LBI first in Surf City, then Barnegat Light, and finally a summer home in Loveladies. The carefree memories of family, friends, birthday parties, fishing and walking in the surf along the beach will long be remembered.

Marge’s generous, vibrant and adventurous spirit, artistic talent, love of life and family will be dearly missed. May her memory be for a blessing.
