Frances Ruth McCaw

Frances Ruth McCaw of Philadelphia passed away peacefully on July 5, 2022, just short of her 91st birthday. She was the proud mother of Shelley Aronson of Philadelphia and David Aronson of Dusseldorf, Germany, and the loving grandmother to Jordan Aronson of South Orange, New Jersey, and Ian Aronson of Portland, Oregon. Her second husband Byron died in 2014.

Fran was born to Samuel and Regina (Jean) Epstein in New York City, but relocated to Manchester, New Hampshire during World War II. While attending Manchester Central High School, Fran won several composition awards and penned the Class of 1949 Ode. Fran met her first husband, Abraham Aronson, in the 7th grade and became childhood sweethearts. They were married in 1952.

Fran and Byron married in 1982 and relocated to St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. After surviving one too many hurricanes, they returned to the mainland in 2007. Fran relocated to Philadelphia in 2014 to be closer to her son Shelley.

Never satisfied with being a housewife, Fran first worked in mills and offices in Manchester. She later became a telephone switchboard operator, and a bookkeeper for an electronics firm, a civil engineer and a CPA. Fran’s true calling was as a travel agent, a career that extended over 30 years. While working at the premier travel agency on St. Croix, she was among the first agents to be trained on American Airlines’ computerized reservations system. Her travels spanned the globe.

Fran enjoyed all types of music, from the orchestra to reggae, even better if she could dance to it with Byron. A perfect fall Sunday afternoon was watching professional football and eating Chinese food. Fran was an ardent supporter of all liberal causes, participating in marches and demonstrations well into her 80s.

Fran could fit in anywhere. At events where she didn’t know anyone, Fran could engage with people of all types and quickly win them over. Her high spirit lifted all around her.

A recording of Fran’s memorial service can be found at or on the Platt Memorial Chapels’ website at Donations in her memory can be made to the Women’s Coalition of St. Croix, 45 Fisher Street, Christiansted, St. Croix USVI 00820 ( or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
