Gertrude "Trudy" Blackman

Gertrude “Trudy” Blackman, beloved mother and grandmother, 83, of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, died on Sunday, January 6. Trudy was born on July 29, 1935 in Philadelphia to Ben and Bertha Bergman. Trudy was the widow of the late Edward Blackman, pharmacist. She is survived by her son, Sheldon Blackman (Collingswood), and her daughter, Audrey Stone, (Marlton). Trudy was no stranger to hardship in her life and when Eddie died suddenly at the age of 35, Trudy, a homemaker, found herself bankrupt and forced to learn clerical and other skills to raise 5-year old Audrey and 8 year old Sheldon by herself. Trudy took on extra shifts, including waking up at 4:30 AM to bring in extra money. She worked at Ancora State Mental Hospital for 20 years, and although she was only 4 foot 11, she was able to hold her own with the hospital residents including the violent offenders. Despite her small stature, most recently 90 pounds with her sneakers on, Trudy loved to eat, especially when her friends came for lunches and to celebrate family birthdays and other events. Trudy was so proud of her family. She bragged about Sheldon’s work as an attorney, especially as a law guardian, as well as Audrey’s work at the bank and the fantastic job Audrey did raising Courtney and Evan. Trudy talked about how good her children were to her; Sheldon taking her to her medical appointments; Audrey managing the finances and both of them making sure Trudy never needed anything. She loved spending time with Courtney and Evan, who’s own father, Bill, died when they were teenagers. Trudy was very close to Bill and thought of him as a second son. Trudy was resilient and despite the hardships, she loved to travel and helped coordinate group trips to Hong Kong and Greece. She also was always up for a game of rummy cube or mah-jongg… Or a cookie. Trudy spent the last few years living in an assisted living facility and knew — and greeted—everyone – residents and staff members – on a first name basis and participated in many of the activities, regularly winning at bingo. She was a beloved mom and mom-mom and friend and is already missed.
